Child Welfare Information Gateway: Mental Health

The newly updated Mental Health section provides mental health information and resources related to children and adolescents involved in the child welfare system. Topics include common mental health issues, the range and effectiveness of mental health services, obtaining mental health services for families, systems issues in mental health service delivery, and mental health in the Child and Family Services Reviews.

American Psychological Association

Based in Washington, DC, the American Psychological Association (APA) is a scientific and professional organization that represents psychology in the United States. With 150,000 members, APA is the largest association of psychologists worldwide.  The website provides information on a wide variety of subjects including violence, depression, and post traumatic stress.

National Institute of Mental Health

The NIMH website provides detailed reports, research and news on a wide variety of topics including anxiety disorders, specific diagnosis.  This is a go to resource for understanding Mental Health issues.

American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

Information is provided as a public service to aid in the understanding and treatment of the developmental, behavioral, and mental disorders which affect an estimated 7 to 12 million children and adolescents at any given time in the United States. You will find information on child and adolescent psychiatry, fact sheets for parents and caregivers, AACAP membership, current research, practice guidelines, managed care information, awards and fellowship descriptions, meeting information, and much more.

The Center for the Promotion of Mental Health in Juvenile Justice is dedicated to providing expert guidance to juvenile justice settings regarding best practices for mental health assessment and referral.

Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law

For three decades, the Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law has been the nation's leading legal advocate for people with mental disabilities. Our precedent-setting litigation has outlawed institutional abuse and won protections against arbitrary confinement. In the courts and in Congress, our advocacy has opened up public schools, workplaces, housing and other opportunities for people with mental disabilities to participate in community life.

Each State has a protection and advocacy agency that receives funding from the Federal Center for Mental Health Services. Agencies are mandated to protect and advocate for the rights of people with mental illnesses and to investigate reports of abuse and neglect in facilities that care for or treat individuals with mental illnesses. These facilities, which may be public or private, include hospitals, nursing homes, community facilities, board and care homes, homeless shelters, jails, and prisons. Agencies provide advocacy services or conduct investigations to address issues that arise during transportation or admission to such facilities, during residency in them, or within 90 days after discharge from them.
