Requirements when you are 17

<BACK

During the calendar month following your 17th birthday, the department must conduct an assessment to determine your skills and abilities to live independently and become self-sufficient.  This is the last year to ensure that you have the necessary skills and support services.  Be sure to review the guidelines and worksheets to make sure you have received everything you are entitled to before aging out.

Guidelines

Independent Living Guidelines - Normalcy (13+) Normalization or normalcy means that all foster children should be permitted to engage in age-appropriate life activities.

Independent Living Staffing Guidelines (13+)

Independent Living Education and Career Planning (13+) Upon turning 13, you must choose an educational goal and a career path. The plan is to be developed with participation of you, your foster parents, and at least one of your teachers.  The plan must be in writing, and included in each judicial review.  If you change your mind about your goals the plan must be re-written.

Independent Living Guidelines 17 This is one of the most important times in your efforts to receive everything you need to become self-sufficient.

Extending Jurisdiction  The court may, upon your motion, extend its jurisdiction until the you reach the age of 19.  Extending Jurisdiction can be very helpful in order to be sure you have received everything you are entitled to as a young adult aging out of the foster care system.

Subsidized Independent Living Subsidized Independent Living (SIL) is a hybrid service that allows a foster youth who is between the ages of 16 and 18 to live semi-independently in an unlicensed setting, while still receiving caseworker and judicial oversight, with the agency paying the foster care board rate directly to the youth.

Worksheets - Many of the worksheets below are for you to fill-out and review with your service worker, foster parent or placement, or a trusted adult.  Review them to be sure you have gotten everything you need before aging out.
